Task 01: Dieter Rams 10 principles of good design
Headphones:
1. innovative - i wouldn't say headphones are completely unique, although the design of my JBL headphones are fairly unique with button placements on the back right ear piece and the ability to fold in to allow for ease of transportation.
2. Useful - The design of the headphones are particularly useful as they fit their purpose of connecting to a media device, outputting sound and sitting comfortably on someones head.
3. Aesthetic - The headphones are fairly aesthetically pleasing as they have an all round white finish on them with a blue/white light to indicate connectivity and battery awareness.
4. Understandable - The buttons on the device are easy to understand for volume + and - a button in between to pause and an on/off button.
5. unobtrusive - Due to the design of the headphones and their complete white layer, they dont allow attention to be drawn to any buttons, you only see the headphones, although being fully white may indicate a slight draw of attention.
6. Honest - the design of the headphones do not mislead the user in any way, they produce sound well, have a built in mic and is not said to have any other special functions.
7. long lasting - The headphones are sturdy and have been thrown to the bottom of a bag, dropped and are still working at 100% making them durable and therefore long lasting.
8. As little design as possible - They're simply headphones and nothing more. They dont have any additional unnecessary features that make them over complicated with design features.
Glass Bottle:
I wouldn't say the glass bottle is of a "good design" as it doesn't follow a majority of the design principles.
1. innovative - there isn't anything unique about a bottle, only that it is made of glass over standard plastic
2. Useful - can store liquid
3. Aesthetic - not aesthetically pleasing as it is just a very simple concept.
4. Understandable - most people know what a bottle is, but the screw top of the bottle could be misleading.
5. unobtrusive- There are no attention drawing aesthetics of the bottle although there is a sticker label that over time begins to peel
6. Honest - As honest as a bottle can be, it say it holds water, it can.
7. long lasting - it would last a long time although if dropped, would more than likely crack on impact making it unusable
8. As little design as possible - there are no extra design features of the water bottle although, as mentioned, a screw cap to the extent it has seems unnecessary
