The Story of a "Thing" 

The Brief:
I have been asked to go to a charity shop, a flea market, a boot sale to or somehitng similar to buy a 'second hand' time that costs less than £5. this must appeal to you, something you are drawn to. this can be absolutely anything, item of clothing, domestic item, playful item, tool, poster virtually any designed artefact.

Write a 2000+ word essay exploring the deeper background, what was before it, can it be reused, why was it made, pre-life and afterlife.

The items Pre-existence - when did this item emerge? what materials were used and their source and how they developed = and the impact the material has had. what was it based on? what is the context for this item?

development and application use- why was it designed? what need did it serve? emotional? something else? was it successful and abasing what criteria? was it useful for long or short? why? who needed it or wanted it when it was new...why? were there broader implications?

end of use for the item - what happens after the item has ceased to be useful? is it disposed of? where would it go after? repurposed or re-contexualised?

essay and structure - 

  • the essay can be written in either the 1st or 2nd person.
  • it should be symmetrically researched using a range of sources
  • assertions should be supported by evidence
  • harvard referencing should be used 
  • images can be included
  • the essay should be 2000 words +/- 200 words (10%)
Key dates: 
7th november - The trip to London has the intention to help develop thinking and ideas for the assignment. We will visit the design museum and possibly visit the V&A 
14th november - birng in your item that you have chosen to see what people have collected and explore why
30th november - develop an essay plan and submit by this date for informative feedback. 

FINAL DEADLINE

15:00pm 11th January 2019. Submission will be done electronically as a word document 

Any late work will only be able to achieve a maximum of D-.
